Part V: Don't Keep Me Waiting

"Hello and Happy New Year!

Yes, we’re back with notations to some of our songs. Check out the older ones also, there’s some stuff from ’Tides’ available. This time however, it’ll not be a guitar tab as previously, but a notation of Marko’s playing on ’Don’t Keep Me Waiting’ from Circus Colossus.

Some words on the song itself: we had decided to make a real rocking album and there wasn’t a plan for a slow tune or a ballad this time. Then Valtteri mailed me a maybe four minute piece of music with him playing the piano.  It had several parts and sounded pretty cool, the idea was that I’d try to come up with some melodies and we’d continue from there.

Two parts in the piece struck me right away, and I started humming da-da-da-waiting along with one of them and thought that’d be the chorus. Then I put the other part I liked next to it, put together a basic structure , started writing some lyrics, and pretty soon had a 2-minute song together.

Now hold on, two minutes? That’s like an intro, right? It could have been easy to start building a power ballad from the thing, the way ’Stranger’, ’Don’t Touch the Sun’ or ’Learn To Live’ are,   but  somehow this thing didn’t seem to call for it. But I wasn’t sure.

Then Pekka came to my place to sing the demos for ’Rider of Storm’ and ’Movie Gods’ and being the freak he is he also learned the song and nailed the demo for this one too in a heartbeat. Along the way he also put the final touches on the melody in  especially the verses. I sent the song over to the other guys and after some discussion we decided to record it and also to leave it the way it was, very short and simple,

The one who worked on this song the most however is Marko, he played everything you hear on the album himself at his home studio, and also created the intro and the outro for the song.

The notation is made from midi files that Marko sent to me, imported and tweaked a bit on my computer with a Sibelius notation software. I am not very familiar with piano notations, so some things might look a bit clumsy, I added the chord names on top if someone wants to try this song on the guitar, it sounds nice that way too, we’ve done this song unplugged with Pekka. But you’d need Pekka…

Anyway, hope you’ll find the notation useful if you like this song and want to learn it. More transcriptions from CC coming up later."

’Til then,

Tuomas
